City of Brass is a rare Land from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Eternal, mana cost — (lands have no mana cost). Its rules text reads: "Whenever this land becomes tapped, it deals 1 damage to you. {T}: Add one mana of any color." It is legal in Modern, Legacy, Commander.

Mana Confluence is a rare Land from Journey into Nyx, mana cost — (lands have no mana cost). Its rules text reads: "{T}, Pay 1 life: Add one mana of any color." It is legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Commander.

Side by side

Both lands make any color and both charge you life to do it, which is why Commander players constantly swap between them. The differences live in the exact wording: read when each one deals its damage and under what condition, because corner cases — being tapped by an opponent's effect, for example — are decided by that wording alone. Verdict: they are close enough that most five-color and four-color decks that want this effect run both, and decks choosing one should decide by the corner cases in their local meta rather than by habit. Neither replaces a real mana base; both are fixing on top of lands that make your primary colors for free.

How to decide in your deck

Ask what your deck actually does with the card: how often the corner-case wording triggers, whether the life or tempo difference shows up in your games, and whether the slot is competing with a card that does something your deck needs more. Then test both versions — MTGBrew's AI deck builder makes swapping one card and re-checking the deck's curve and colors a two-minute job instead of an evening of goldfishing.

Build it yourself

Every card in this article is a real card you can look up in the MTGBrew card database, with its current text and legality. When you are ready to turn the idea into a list, MTGBrew's AI deck builder builds around your commander, your colors, and — as a hard rule — never over the budget you set. Save the list to your collection on MTGBrew and tune it from there.

One more consideration

Consistency is the least glamorous stat in Magic and the one that decides the most games. Whatever this article's subject, the practical test is the same: shuffle up, draw opening hands, and ask honestly how often the plan survives a mulligan, an answer from an opponent, and a slow start — all three in the same game. Decks that pass that test are the decks that win pods, and building them is exactly what MTGBrew's tools are for.
