Dragon decks win in the air and win big. The early game is ramp and survival; the late game is a sequence of flying threats too large to race and too numerous to answer one-for-one. This deck tech walks through the archetype's core pieces using real cards, so you can build, upgrade, or play against it with your eyes open.

Core pieces, in real cards

Dragon Tempest (mana cost {1}{R}; Enchantment; rarity: uncommon; most recent printing listed by Scryfall: Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander): Whenever a creature you control with flying enters, it gains haste until end of turn.
Whenever a Dragon you control enters, it deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of Dragons you control. Scourge of Valkas (mana cost {2}{R}{R}{R}; Creature — Dragon; 4/4; rarity: mythic; most recent printing listed by Scryfall: Forgotten Realms Commander): Flying
Whenever this creature or another Dragon you control enters, it deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of Dragons you control.
{R}: This creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn. Ancient Copper Dragon (mana cost {4}{R}{R}; Creature — Elder Dragon; 6/5; rarity: mythic; most recent printing listed by Scryfall: Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate): Flying
Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, roll a d20. You create a number of Treasure tokens equal to the result.

Notice what those cards have in common: each one either advances the plan by itself or multiplies a teammate. That is the test for every slot in the archetype — a card that only works when everything else is already working is a win-more card, and win-more cards are where cuts come from.

Build and check your list with the MTGBrew AI deck builder, and browse every card mentioned here in the MTGBrew card database on MTGBrew.

How the games actually play out

Every slot should argue for itself against the card it replaced. When you test a new inclusion, play it through the deck's normal sequence — early development, mid-game pressure, late-game closing — and notice where it helps and where it sits dead in hand. Cards that only shine in the best-case scenario are the first cuts when a proven role-player needs the slot back.

If this topic is on your bench, keep going with Esper Sentinel in Commander: Early Tax and Card Draw — it covers the neighbouring decisions from a different angle, and the two pieces together give you a fuller picture than either one alone.

Tuning the list

Tune in small steps. Change two or three cards at a time, play several games, and write down what actually happened rather than what you hoped would happen. Deck building rewards that patience — a list adjusted on evidence converges on its best version, while a list rebuilt after every loss never stays still long enough to be judged.

When you are ready to build your own version, start from a budget you are comfortable with and hold the line on it — the builder at MTGBrew's AI deck builder treats your budget as a hard rule, which is exactly how a real brew should behave.
