Mana Vault is a Artifact (mana cost {1}; rarity: mythic; most recent printing listed by Scryfall: Double Masters 2022). Three mana now for one mana paid, with a life tax and an untap restriction that define its real cost.

What Mana Vault does

The card's exact text:

This artifact doesn't untap during your untap step.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay {4}. If you do, untap this artifact.
At the beginning of your draw step, if this artifact is tapped, it deals 1 damage to you.
{T}: Add {C}{C}{C}.

Read literally, that text is the whole evaluation. It tells you the timing the card wants, the board states where it overperforms, and the games where it will sit in your hand doing very little. Commander is a format of ordinary turns — judge the card on what it does on the turns you actually get, not on the one game in ten where everything lines up.

You can check the exact wording any time in the MTGBrew card database, and test where it fits with the MTGBrew AI deck builder.

Which decks want it

The decks that want Mana Vault are the ones whose ordinary game already produces the situations its text rewards. If your list has to bend its curve, its colours, or its plan to make this card look good, the card is a guest, not a core piece — and guests get cut first when a proven role-player needs the slot. If your deck creates those situations by default, this is the kind of card that quietly wins the games nobody remembers a single play from.

Weigh the mana value as part of the verdict. A cheap card can be wrong for a deck and still be inexpensive to be wrong about — it cycles through a game quickly and rarely strands a whole turn — while an expensive card has to change the game the turn it lands, because the turn it cost was real. Read Mana Vault against your own curve: where it sits among your other plays at the same cost decides whether it is competing with your plan or completing it.

If this topic is on your bench, keep going with Ureni, the Song Unending Commander Spotlight: What This Legend Brings to the Command Zone — it covers the neighbouring decisions from a different angle, and the two pieces together give you a fuller picture than either one alone.

The honest verdict

Play it where its text is already true. Commander rewards decks built from cards that work together on unremarkable turns, and Mana Vault is exactly as good as the board states your deck naturally builds. Brew it, test it through real games, and let the results — not the highlight reel — decide whether it keeps its slot.
