Zombie decks win by dying profitably. Recursive creatures return, death triggers accumulate, and the board refills faster than opponents can clear it. The tribe rewards patience and punishes anyone who wastes removal on the wrong corpse. This deck tech walks through the archetype's core pieces using real cards, so you can build, upgrade, or play against it with your eyes open.

Core pieces, in real cards

Gravecrawler (mana cost {B}; Creature — Zombie; 2/1; rarity: rare; most recent printing listed by Scryfall: Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander): This creature can't block.
You may cast this card from your graveyard as long as you control a Zombie. Diregraf Captain (mana cost {1}{U}{B}; Creature — Zombie Soldier; 2/2; rarity: uncommon; most recent printing listed by Scryfall: Midnight Hunt Commander): Deathtouch
Other Zombie creatures you control get +1/+1.
Whenever another Zombie you control dies, target opponent loses 1 life. Death Baron (mana cost {1}{B}{B}; Creature — Zombie Wizard; 2/2; rarity: rare; most recent printing listed by Scryfall: Foundations): Skeletons you control and other Zombies you control get +1/+1 and have deathtouch. (Any amount of damage they deal to a creature is enough to destroy it.)

Notice what those cards have in common: each one either advances the plan by itself or multiplies a teammate. That is the test for every slot in the archetype — a card that only works when everything else is already working is a win-more card, and win-more cards are where cuts come from.

Build and check your list with the MTGBrew AI deck builder, and browse every card mentioned here in the MTGBrew card database on MTGBrew.

How the games actually play out

Ask what the deck looks like when it is merely fine. A resilient build still develops its board, still draws extra cards, and still threatens something through an average opening hand. The spectacular draws will take care of themselves; your card choices should be spent making the average draw functional, because you will see far more average draws than perfect ones.

If this topic is on your bench, keep going with Godo, Bandit Warlord Commander Spotlight: What This Legend Brings to the Command Zone — it covers the neighbouring decisions from a different angle, and the two pieces together give you a fuller picture than either one alone.

Tuning the list

Protect the plan, but do not smother it. A small protection package earns its keep when your commander is the engine; beyond that, extra protection spells dilute the very strategy they are guarding. The same discipline applies to interaction: run enough answers to stop a game-ending threat, and spend the remaining slots on cards that move your own plan forward.

When you are ready to build your own version, start from a budget you are comfortable with and hold the line on it — the builder at MTGBrew's AI deck builder treats your budget as a hard rule, which is exactly how a real brew should behave.
